EMDR at Hope Ave

What is EMDR?

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a powerful therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences and distressing memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on processing these memories in a way that reduces their emotional charge, allowing you to move forward with a greater sense of peace and balance.

EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds—while you focus on a specific traumatic memory or distressing emotion. This process helps your brain reprocess these memories, often leading to a significant reduction in the intensity of emotional and physical reactions associated with them.

Is EMDR Right for You?

Many people come to EMDR after finding that traditional therapy methods haven’t fully addressed their trauma or the emotional difficulties they face. EMDR can be especially effective for those who are dealing with:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Childhood trauma or abuse

  • Sexual assault or domestic violence

  • Grief and loss

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or phobias

  • Emotional or physical reactions tied to specific memories

If you find that you’re "stuck" in your trauma or that certain events or memories continue to trigger intense emotional responses, EMDR could offer you the relief that other therapies may not have.

EMDR Specialist at Hope Ave Therapy

Parker Lawrence brings over seven years of clinical experience to his role as an EMDR specialist at Hope Ave Therapy. He earned his Master’s in Social Work from Boston College and trained with the EMDR International Association. Parker's diverse background includes providing therapy to wrongfully convicted individuals at the Boston College Innocence Project, conducting group and individual sessions for patients with serious mental illness in a hospital setting, and offering therapeutic interventions to recently housed homeless elders with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.

Parker advocates for EMDR as a powerful approach to directly address trauma, rather than just managing symptoms. He has witnessed the rapid and effective changes EMDR can facilitate, allowing individuals to heal from past traumas. Committed to a client-centered approach, Parker emphasizes flexibility and a non-judgmental environment, working in partnership with clients whom he views as experts in their own lives.

What to Expect in an EMDR Session

You might be wondering what to expect from EMDR therapy. The process is tailored to your needs, but typically follows these steps:

Step 1: Initial Consultation

Your EMDR journey begins with an initial consultation with Parker Lawrence. This session helps Parker understand your history, current struggles, and goals for therapy. He will explain EMDR in detail and determine whether it’s the right fit for you.

Step 2: Preparation

In the preparation phase, Parker will help you learn coping strategies and tools to manage emotional distress that may arise during the EMDR process. It’s important to feel emotionally safe before diving into reprocessing traumatic memories.

Step 3: Assessment

In this phase, you and Parker will identify specific memories, beliefs, or negative feelings that will be the focus of the EMDR sessions. This could include past traumatic experiences, specific fears, or harmful thoughts about yourself.

Step 4: Reprocessing

During the reprocessing phase, Parker will guide you through bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones) while you focus on a targeted memory or belief. This allows your brain to process the memory in a new way, helping reduce its emotional intensity and impact.

Step 5: Installation and Closure

After reprocessing, Parker will work with you to strengthen positive beliefs and feelings. You’ll leave each session with a sense of closure and tools to manage any distress. If needed, follow-up sessions will ensure you’re making progress and feeling supported throughout the process.

Step 6: Integration

The final phase involves integrating the new, healthier beliefs and feelings into your life. Over time, you’ll notice that the traumatic memories no longer trigger the same emotional or physical responses, allowing you to move forward more freely.

Is EMDR Scientifically Proven?

Yes! EMDR is a highly researched, evidence-based approach that has been shown to be effective in treating trauma and other emotional issues. It has been endorsed by organizations like the American Psychological Association (APA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as a safe and effective treatment for PTSD and trauma-related conditions.

Studies have found that EMDR can lead to faster results than traditional talk therapy, with many clients experiencing significant relief after just a few sessions.
